mohammed cartoon outrage
Holy shit, the Palestinians are MAD.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060202/ap_on_re_mi_ea/prophet_drawings

"Armed militants angered by a cartoon drawing of the Prophet Muhammad published in European newspapers surrounded EU offices in Gaza on Thursday and threatened to kidnap foreigners as outrage over the caricatures spread across the Islamic world."

To quote the article, which is more important in Western society: freedom of expression, or respect of beliefs?

[I think that freedom of expression is more important, but Respect is maybe just as important, if not equally. To respect a person's beliefs though, one needs to recognize genuine respect for that person's identity, being and existence. I mean, that's where their beliefs stem from, reasonably.
We should be honest, and free to express honesty, if we want to learn from each other,
but, to respect someone means to refrain from judging their choices (to say, this is "good", this is "bad"). To call someone destructive and uneducated is rational, but to say it's disgusting and inferior is disrespectful.]

So saying,
I don't think the cartoon is disrespectful (if it portrays the Prophet Muhammed with a turban shaped like a bomb) because it expresses the cartoonist's beliefs that too many Muslims are resorting to violence, but it IS disrespectful if it mocks Muslims and their beliefs as jokes. And Denmark is being disrespectful if their people laugh and agree.

But i ALSO think that the Palestinians are going buck-mad, and they need to simmer down and maybe talk this over a nice cup of coffee. They're not really helping anyone by raising all hell and upping their fire levels, come on now. They want all four countries to apologize for the cartoon, but one guy drew it and one guy published it, isn't that extreme?
And this cartoon being published in September? That's five months ago, that's quite a while.

Why doesn't Europe just say sorry? What is the big deal about apology and a pleasant conversation?
Countries are acting like kindergarteners.
EXCEPT PALESTINIAN GUNMEN WILL START KILLING PEOPLE IF YOU DONT APOLOGIZE BY TONIGHT.
Crazy!

This one picture of a Muslims in Denmark, gathering to pray, this one touched me more than the ones of screaming, livid Muslims in Palestine. There are so few of them, quiet, and just praying calmly in a public terrace. The angry ones are home, and angry amongst angry buddies.
I wonder how these guys feel.
I wonder how Saba feels about this. How crazy is it to move from Palestine to Rhode Island School of Design for an Architecture major? Kind of crazy!

hey, this is kind of like the asian community being enraged by abercrombie t-shirts that depicted dancing buddhas, dojos as pizza places, and a fake advertisement for a chinese-owned laundromat whose motto was "two wongs can make it white!" which alot of people saw as racist (i don't think so, though). yeah, i think there was a "boycott" on abercrombie but asians are still their best customers.

maybe they saw it as, "it takes two chinese people to be worth one white", that could be racist. Abercrombie and Fitch ARE pretty racists, arent they though? i mean they had a bunch of other chinese-worker shirts, but the fact that they dont hire non-white people is pretty racist.
I mean, unless they work backroom in stock, i heard that they have them do that sometimes.

The majority of asian-american teenagers are still just as ignorant as any other american teenager, i think, except in a more asian flavor. Twinge of SATs and UCs and boba.

sorry, but i have to add my two cents:

i don't think it was seen as "two chinese people" being equivalent to a single caucasian, i think there was more of an outcry because the asian community, and many elements found within certain asian cultures, were being made into stereotypical, one-dimensional jokes. those types of portrayals and perceptions of minorities can be damaging, because in the long run they end up dehumanizing individuals into flat, faceless cardboard cutouts which have little depth, and thus little for others to relate to or sympathize with. and if people cannot relate to one another or find common ground, it becomes much easier to simply write someone off as a gook, or a fag, or a wetback, or somehow less than you, and thus easier not only to think that way but to treat others in the same manner.

so yeah, next week we'll continue this dialogue by discussing asian invisibility in the media, hahahaha

and is it actually TRUE they don't hire racial minorities?? i thought that was just a rumor

hahahha yeah i figured the same.

There was an occasion when the big boss came around to do his rounds on the A&F stores in Nevada, and when he found in one store that five of the newly hired employees were Asian, he had them "let go", but only the Asian ones.

And that whole thing about how if they do hire minorities, they work in the back.

And then there was an outrage in the AsAm activist community, so PAPAYA told us to boycott A&F and tell our friends to, too. I dont know if they still do it anymore, because that was a long while ago.

how cute, i didn't know there was an abbreviation for asian american. AsAm.

okay, but wouldn't it be illegal for a&f to only allow minorites to work in the back? how can they get away with that?
